Certificate III in Retail Operations

Summary

This course is for people wishing to enter a more specialised role within the retail industry.

Depending on the course electives available/chosen participants will learn about controlling stock and loss prevention, merchandising, selling products and services, customer service, product knowledge, operating retail equipment, monitoring food safety, point of sales handling procedures, communication, teamwork, maintaining store security, maintaining and ordering stock, market profiling, building relationships, training and assessment, product recommendations, and producing financial reports.

 Learning will take place by a combination of strategies, including practical activities, online learning, industry case simulations and operating both individually and in teams.

 

Units of Competency

A total of nine units are to be completed. This compromises:

  • Five core units, and
  • Four elective units

The elective units chosen will depend upon the industry the participant is employed in/wishes to seek employment in.

 

Duration

The duration of this course varies depending upon previous retail experience and if it is undertaken as a traineeship. Generally the duration ranges from 6 months to 24 months. 

 

Assessment 

Assessment  is completed through a number of means. Some examples are: short written assessments, direct observation of trainee performing specific tasks, verbal questioning, role plays, supervisor reports and completing action plans.

 

Articulation

Participants who complete this course may be eligible to complete the Certificate IV in Retail Management. 

 

Career Opportunities

Team Leader, Food Safety Supervisor, Supervisor roles.

 

Entry requirements

Entry is by one of the following means:

  1. Having completed Certificate II in Retail Operations
  2. Being recognised as competent against the core units of competency from Certificate II in Retail Operations
  3. Having sufficient retail employment experience to equate to the above or indicate likely success at this level   of qualification. A job role that involved the demonstrated application of the above competencies over an extended period, typically in the order of two years, would be a satisfactory indicator.
