Certificate IV in Retail Management

Summary

This course has been designed to develop the first line management skills of those working in the retail industry. It applies to those who are managing a small retail outlet, or a section or department within a larger retail store.

Depending on the course electives available/chosen participants will learn about managing sales and service delivery, leading and managing people, food safety, OH&S, managing financial resources and recruiting and selecting staff.

Learning will take place by a combination of strategies that include practical activities, interactive online learning, industry case studies, role plays, simulations, operating both individually and in teams, and action plans.

This course may be undertaken as a traineeship.

 

Units of Competency

A total of twelve units must be completed. This compromises:

  • Six core units, and
  • Six elective units

Elective Units

The elective units chosen will depend upon the industry the participant is employed in/wishes to seek employment in.

 

Duration

The duration of this course varies depending upon previous retail experience and if it is undertaken as a traineeship. Generally the duration ranges from 12 to 24 months. 

 

Assessment 

Assessment  is completed through a number of means. Some examples are: evidence portfolio, short written assessments, direct observation of trainee performing specific tasks, verbal questioning, supervisor reports and completing action plans.

 

Articulation

Participants who finish this course you may be eligible to complete a Diploma of Retail Management.

Entry requirements

Entry is by one of the following means:

  1. Having completed Certificate III in Retail Operations or Certificate III in Retail Supervision
  2. Being recognised as competent against the core units of competency from Certificate III in Retail Operations or Certificate III in Retail Supervision
  3. Having sufficient retail employment experience to equate to the above or indicate likely success at this level   of qualification. A job role that involved the demonstrated application of the above competencies over an extended period, typically in the order of two years, would be a satisfactory indicator.
